There are many historical reasons why Father’s Day was established. The first reason dates back 4,000 years ago. Interestingly, a young boy by the name of Elmusu made a wish; hoping his Babylonian father would have good health and longevity of life. By simply carving his wish upon a chunk of clay, the young lad rallied others to embrace his act of mercy; soon after, the day was marked as a tradition in his community.
Secondly, in countries where the Catholic Church held significant position of influence on society and its culture; Father’s Day was celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day.
Seemingly, there is another a story about a church in Fairmont, West Virginia, called Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, which is presently named Central United Methodist Church; where one of its members, Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, proposed a ceremony to support the families of those who were killed in a deadly mine explosion. Reportedly, 361 men were killed in this explosion. Sadly, some of those killed were fathers who were recent immigrants to the United States from Italy.
Ironically, some even consider Father’s Day a day of acknowledging our Heavenly Divine Creator.
Nevertheless, contrary to the countless stories why Father’s Day was established, I find it extremely imperative to take time out and acknowledge the one man that helped create who we have become; a living and breathing vessel of hope, faith and love.
Unfortunately, over the years, many sons and daughters around the globe have been torn away from their father’s, or even worse; have no idea where their father is. However, for those who have been blessed to have a father in their lives consistently; always remember to tell him how much you care, and by all means; give him unconditional love.
So often, time consumes your life and prevents you from taking a few minutes out of your busy schedule; to let your dad know just how important he really is. And considering he’s second to mom, your dad needs to know he is just as much loved and appreciated.
So today, as you extend these loving thoughts with your father; in an effort to uplift his spirit and put a smile upon his face; be grateful, because you have been blessed with one of the greatest men on earth.
