In this, the second of the Granny Beamish series, we meet Kenneth (aka Warg when he's "having his monthlies"). Warg is in trouble, being hunted not just by the ineffectual Wolf Patrol, but by the far from ineffectual Killer Calhoun and his sidekick, both of whom have come a long way from the slag heaps of Pant-y-Gyrdl.
Once more, Karen Wolfe displays her mastery in juxtaposing real pathos with a wit so martini-dry it makes your eyes water. Who else could present such gleeful pokes at officialdom, evidenced by the aftermath of Granny's fury when the warden takes her dog to the pound?
The characters are finely drawn. My favourite has to be the dreadful Hilary, with a cash register where her heart should be, preparing for her pedigree pooch's "wedding day", her head full of the proposed profit from the puppies. The climax is tense and scary, yet still full of humour. If you want a few hours of escapism with a lot of laughs, you'll find it here.
