The book begins with the beginning of Betsy's recovery journey and shows how difficult it can be to partake in that recovery process when it seems that all the odds are stacked against you.

I was born into sickness and poverty of the soul. I guess I didn’t believe I deserved much better. I guess I thought I’d be able to take it, never knowing what it would be like at all. I think it’s the same way for us all. The only difference is that some of us knew they deserved better than I thought I did. I have learned though. Oh yes! I have learned through all of this that I deserved better. But, it’s too late now. I have a renal disease from birth for the rest of my life. There’s no changing that part of the game. The good thing is that this disease is treatable over long, very long, periods of time. I can buy time to keep existing until, maybe someday, I can begin to really live and become an expert at playing the game called Life.
