This story is a historical adventure-romance based on the ill-fated British settlement of New Smyrna, FL (1768-1778) when the British briefly took control of Florida from Spain. It was a 14th British colony that lasted only a decade. The history of this colony was one of the most interesting chapters of early American history. You can see why when you read this historical novella.

This is a historical novella about events in a 14th British colony in Florida in the 18th century.  In 1768 the British gained control of Florida from Spain.  They maintained control of Florida until 1778, when the territory was returned to Spain.

Andrew Turnbull, a wealthy British landowner hired 1,400 people from the Mediterrean area, mostly Minorcans, as indentured servants to work his fields in the British colony of New Smyrna in British East Florida (1768 -1778.)  He promised them their own plot of land, decent treatment, and freedom after a set period. Turnbull broke all his promises to the workers and enslaved them.  The Minorcans endured brutal conditions and over half died during the ten year period they were enslaved.

This historical adventure-romance is the story of an orphaned teenager and his girlfriend who grow up under harsh slavery conditions, and who must  cope with hostile Indians, dangerous animals of the Florida wilderness, brutal slavemasters, and parents who disapprove of their romance.

Excerpt

After eating, Miguel walked to the river to wash his bowl in the salt water. He took off his shirt, rolled up his trousers and stepped into the shallow water near the edge. He
used the bowl to pour water on his back. It felt cool to the welts, still there but not as sore.
Antony came to join him. "They whipped you?"
"They gave me fifty lashes for running away."
"I heard they almost beat Jorge Segui to death for arguing with a Chief named Silas."
"I know of Silas," said Miguel.
"I'm sorry about your beating, but I came down here because I need to have a word with you," said Antony.
Miguel was curious. "Sure, what's on your mind?"
"I heard that you were flirting with Anita."
"That's not true. She just bandaged my wound." He pointed to the bandage still on his arm.
"Well, I heard there was a little flirting as she did that. Look, she's only fourteen and I'm almost twenty, but we're planning to marry someday. She may be attracted to you because you're closer to her age. I'll forget it this time, but I'm telling you to steer clear of her."
With that, Antony walked away.
