After a battle, Napoleon bonaparte came upon a dog lying beside the body of its dead master, licking the man's face and howling pitifuly. Napoleon stopped, and the dog ran up to him as if asking to help his master, then back to the slain soldier.
Napoleon remembered that incident until his own death. "This soldier lay there deserted by all except his faithful dog. I have looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the fates of nations. I have, without emotion, given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was brought to tears by the grief of a dog for its slain master."
