When my brother Steve landed a lucrative job in Fort Lauderdale, I'd mentioned nepotism and sneered. Our godmother Rita was a major stockholder in that firm. Two years later, when my godmother phoned and discreetly mentioned available jobs in Fort Lauderdale I'd grabbed my best friend Marty, a road map, kissed my mother goodbye and set off for a new life—minus sleet.
After two days of hard driving, we checked into a dreary motel in Cocoa Beach. Immediately, I called Steve. The words he spoke were not encouraging.
"Cocoa Beach? I told you to stop in Georgia. They don't have hurricanes in Wisconsin, Kelsey. You don't know the destruction this storm could cause. I'm leaving my apartment now and going over to Rita's. We'll do what we can to prepare. I'll call you tomorrow—if I'm still around."
That last crack was unnecessary. Steve delighted in causing anxiety. I turned on the television set in the motel room and searched for a news channel.
"A category 4 storm with winds of 150 mph."
I switched channels, but the news did not improve.
"If waves crested at 10 feet near the eastern edge of downtown Fort Lauderdale, they could swamp the finger islands along Las Olas Boulevard."
Just like my brother to tell the truth when he should have kept his big mouth shut.
