I had hardly fallen asleep when something jarred me awake. The sergeant was walking up and down the company line, whispering and shaking shoulders, rousing every man......
The darkness made it difficult to see what we were doing, but all around I heard the soft rustle of cloth and the click of equipment. Because Santa Anna wanted to take the fort by surprise, no fires were allowed. Men could not even smoke their cigarettes.
