At daybreak, a gust of wind swept through camp blowing tents on top of wary sleepers. Smoke from the fire’s dying embers swirled about the place and into waking eyes. “A rude way to say ‘good morning’,” thought Andro as he sat up off the grass.
“No breakfast today, just gather your things – and hurry it up!” shouted Reissing, stomping between slumberers. He stirred the company like a pot.
The tempest came and went; a giant’s breath that circled Rintar and raced across the plain. In the east, the sky burned a sickly yellow, slowly enveloping the gray remnants of night. Low tumbling clouds streamed swiftly above, bearing the odor of burning and sulfur. The city domes gave no shine in the obscured light; their usual gilded luster now dull. Cries from the western fields made the men realize they were not alone in suffering the ill wind.
