‘Hi Honey, I’m home, calls Steve as he walks in the back door. Claire, standing at the sink, peeling veggies, grits her teeth, and thinks, ‘tonight would be a good night to hit him. He could put the steak on his eye afterwards.’
He came in, dumped his workbag on the floor, and took off his work shoes, sat down and sighed. ‘Get us a beer will you?’ Yes, he can see she is busy. He does not even notice that it’s already waiting for him. ‘Have you got the camping gear ready?’
‘Not yet…. You could get it ready, you know.’
‘I have to get the bike up to scratch the chain will need oiling. Goodness knows what the gears are like.’
‘Maybe a weekend away with a few work mates is what you need.’
‘A few mates? No just me and Chris.’
‘Just you and Chris?’
‘Yeah, is that a problem?’
‘No, I don’t suppose so.’ She was a bit put out that he let her think there were a few of them and it was only him and this Christine from work, what was she supposed to think? She has no reason to distrust him. Now. And he was very easy and casual about everything. Should she worry? No. she was being silly, damn her over active imagination.
