KEVIN looks up from a schematic of the parking lot. Full of physics equations and arrows. "Did you realize that at a highly conservative 48 carts per hour, $10 an hr estimate, averaging 25 hrs per week, in one year, we'll push 62,000 carts... and gross aroun—"
"$12 grand a year. For moving metal things on wheels, and selling our souls into slavery."
Brent stands before the booth, work clothes still on. Allison's eyes twinkle. "But you make being a slave seem so hip..."
Carson flexes his biceps, nodding. Mindy holds apart two fingers to convey her boyfriend's actual muscle mass.
The door to the diner swings open.
Mindy tenses in Carson's arms. His face goes tight. So does Brent's. Meadows takes a sip of his water.
Vatolo Alvaro is joined by three other Hispanic boys with the same preppy look. Down to their beige loafers. Vatolo's smirk widens as he catches sight of Carson.
"Carson and company! Que pasa, Cartside, my stoner frienzz? Que hacen, vatossss?"
He spits this last word, drenched with scorn. The s is drawn intolerably long-- as if a Copperhead rests right inside his mouth.
Carson returns the smile. But it is not an honest one. "Well, if it ain't Enrique and the three sombreros..."
