Plato tells us in The Apology of Socrates that Chaerephon went to Delphi and asked the Oracle whether there was anyone wiser than Socrates, and "the Pythian prophetess answered that there was no man wiser."
The word spread that Socrates was the wisest of men, but this did not sit well with Socrates.
