In response to a message from their man in Tunisia, an agent of the ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three is dispatched to escort a defector to the UK. On arrival the agent is not contacted, but becomes the target of mysterious assassins.
The ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three receives a top priority message from Klemperer, their agent-in-place in Tunisia. He is sheltering a high-ranking North Korean political official who wishes to defect to the UK, and an escort is required to see him safely to London.
Sector Three conclude that the defector would be a valuable asset, having much to reveal about his country's military intentions. An agent, code-named Robert Lane, is sent to accompany him to Britain. Arriving at the designated hotel to await contact Lane receives no word, but is put on his guard when he notices his resemblance to a fellow-guest who has suffered a fatal accident. This is the beginning of a series of attempts on Lane's life. The motive is unknown to him as is the identity of his enemy, since he has never been in Tunisia before. Several times he narrowly escapes, until at last Klemperer makes contact. A rendezvous is arranged and Lane is increasingly wary,seeing his adversary in every shadow. He is up against a deadly enemy who is becoming increasingly desperate.

I felt another impact,followed by vibrations that shook this enclosed space. If I moved, those things would crush me.
I'd boarded this truck under cover of darkness about an hour ago, because the tiny village a few miles from Aleppo wouldn't have held me for much longer. The men who hunted for me were getting close.
No one had seen me slide under the tarpaulin while the truck refuelled at the near-derelict petrol station on the outskirts, but in here something like metal bars or machine parts were stacked high in crates and not secured at all.
When the engine quietened I listened for pursuit and heard none. I had been in that village for four days because a heavy influx of heroin into the UK was traced to there. I found the distribution point, a warehouse, and tossed in a grenade, inviting the hostile attention of the local cartel.
