A story based on the Taino, the people who met Columbus. The adventures of a young Taino before, during, and after the arrival of Columbus. This is a historical novella of the Taino people of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and their dealings with Columbus and the Spaniards.
This is the story of Migua, a young Taino, and his bride to be, Surani. It tells of their perils and adventures before, during, and after the arrival of Columbus. It starts in the jungles of South America, and follows their adventures through the Caribbean and Florida.
It also tells of the affair between Pablo Menendez, a young sailor on the Santa Maria, and Havani, a Taino girl who is a cousin of Guacanagari, the great casique of the Taino. It tells how the lives of Pablo and Havani entertwine with the lives of Migua and Surani.
The story also tells of the culture clash between the Taino and the Spaniards. Columbus and Guacanagari at first become very good friends, but their friendship deteriorates when Columbus claims the land for Spain and demands that the Taino pay tribute to Spanish Royalty.
Excerpt
As they approached the village, they suddenly found themselves surrounded by renegades.
Most of the renegades were armed with wooden spears, but some carried Spanish swords: evidence that the Spanish settlement had been wiped out. But they were still combing the island in search of Spaniards that might have escaped the massacre.
There was nowhere to run; they were encircled. The Taino began kicking and pummeling them. Pablo went down, and one of the renegades stood over him holding a sword to his throat.
