Chapter 5
The Blaming Game
The master teacher, Wayne Dyer, hit a home run when he was inspired to compose his bestselling book, “No More Excuses.” The title and the contents of the book really say it all. There are simply no excuses for being emotionally or spiritually stuck, or to be unhappy and unfulfilled in our lives. Although it may sound crude to say that we have no excuses, the truth is, we simply should not have any excuses.
In order to accomplish this level of mastery, where we can move beyond the mask of excuses, we first need to allow ourselves to not only heal from the past but to also honor the reasons why we have had our experiences. Then, we also need to stop blaming other people and circumstances for our perils and feelings of unhappiness.
Becoming a master of spirituality does not require of us to deny our feelings and to make believe that everything is OK when it is not. Being in alignment with our spiritual truth does not mean that we have to become martyrs of circumstances and that we must allow others to step all over us and to take it without an ounce of emotional stir or spark. What it does mean is that we should begin to honor what we are feeling and acknowledge when something is not feeling good and have the courage to look at the situation head on.
Instead of entering into the blaming mode of accusing others for our feelings of unhappiness, we must take responsibility for our own feelings and we must be willing to see what messages are being revealed that need our attention.
It is very easy to say and believe that if others in our lives would simply be more attentive, understanding, compassionate, agreeable, patient, willing to communicate, less likely to become agitated, etc. that we would be able to be more relaxed and happy. The truth is that the only thing that we can do is to express our feelings to others in an authentic way and hope that they are willing and able to listen to us. At the end, we do not have the control in changing others but as we learned in Chapter Two, we do have the ability to impact others by the example that we are reflecting in who we are choosing to be. The only person that we can truly change is ourselves. Blaming others for our perils is simply a poor excuse because it keeps us in a state of justification. If we can blame others for our misfortunes, we can then get comfortable in the victim role. In the victim role, we fail to execute any of the attributes that can bring us to freedom from the pain of blaming and victimization.
Yet, the temptation and patterns to blame are plentiful. We all have our stories and emotional scars of pain from our childhood and our past. We have all, at one time or another experienced feelings of abandonment, neglect, betrayal, cruelty, indifference, rage and violence. Is it possible to ponder that perhaps the reason why we all can relate to these painful experiences is because hidden in the matrix of each of those moments we are being given the opportunities to grow and to implement some of the attributes of mastery?
In the previous chapter I talk about the contracts that we agreed to partake in with all the souls that we meet with in our lives. Perhaps hidden in these contracts were agreements with certain individuals who would ignite within us very deep and raw emotions that would propel us to ignite the attributes of mastery—but before doing so, these emotions of hurt and sadness would rip through us like swords so that we could spark the fire of spirit within each of us that would help us transmute these emotions into a holy and powerful attribute of mastery and love.
Why on earth would we agree to have such contracts? Why would we agree to endure pain, suffering and a temporary loss of our divine identity? We agreed to experience pain and suffering so that we could have the opportunity to not only have the experiences but also to learn how to unveil the opposing side of suffering and pain…to discover peace and wholeness.
We never lost our spiritual identity; we simply chose to temporarily forget that we are masters of love and aspects of the Divine. We chose to forget in order to partake in the human experience in order to filter through our souls the infinite waves of emotions that the human experience renders to us as a gift. For, as much as we may dislike to feel sad and unhappy, think of all the other blissful and wonderful emotions that we are gifted with in the human experience.
Executing the energy of blame in our lives will keep us in a state of emotional blockage and it will also stifle our spiritual growth. Most of the time, the people who we blame for our unhappiness have moved on with their lives and have absolutely no awareness of the toxic energies that we are still holding in place. This may be irritating and frustrating to know but it is a reality that we should chose to look at because in truth, we are only hurting ourselves by choosing to hold on to emotions of the past.
The master of spirituality allows himself/herself to feel the emotional pain of situations but realizes that there is ALWAYS messages of growth in these experiences. With this knowingness, the master allows the physical assimilation of heavy energies to move towards a state of reconciliation while setting into motion the activation and execution of the attributes that will assist him or her to move beyond the physical emotions to a state of spiritual growth.
