I graduated from Hopewell High in 1985, enlisted in the Army Reserves a month after graduation, served 7 years. I was pregnant with my son when my troop was sent to desert storm. I am the proud mother of 3 lovely children.
Joseph Smith a seventeen year old- African American- young man-njust graduating high school- got a job at the mill. Stilll living at home with his mother, father, and three siblings, he feels the it's time for him to start thinging of moving out- on his own; his older brother made different plans for him.
"I couldn't believe my own brother would decieve me so easily; for fear of his own destiny."
Finding himself in the Viet Nam War- fighting to stay alive; pushing emotional feelings deep inside, living in the marsh of death and fear, having to step-up and be a man, then deciding to forgive.
When the sldiers return home from war- they are treated like the enemy; they were called baby killers and drug addicts.
Joe wanted a beter life for himself and graduated technical school and opened his own business, but his war is not over.
Excerpt
My family wrote and wished me late "Happy Birthday's," said they are happy to hear I am well; Leroy wrote a separate letter explaining how he had went to the recruiters office and told them I was the oldest in the house- he was afraid they would come looking for him, and make him enlist, and how we both knew he isn't war material, "Who in the world is?"
I wondered to myself; feeling anger rise in side of me. "How dare he change my fate, for his cowardness! Who in the hell gave him the right to interfere with my life, my job, my plans?"
He continued to write how they didn't even check any records; they said you would have to give them your social security card when you arrived to depart- told me to just write sown your name and address and that was that.
He did apologize and stated he was happy
that I wasn't wounded or killed. He hopes nothing happens to me, since he is the reason I am in this sinful place.
I thought about all I had been through- seen- and Tom. I decided I am here and what is done, is done. I forgave him. I know i did the right thing by fighting s war that wasn't mine.
I learned that life isn't just about me, I am a team player and when put in difficult situation; it's life showing you- it is time for you to grow- up and be a man.

This was a down to earth, heartfelt story with unforgettable characters. An easy to read plot that leaves you with a lasting impression of what life is all about; betrayal, destiny, forgiveness and loss.
