It was just after dark when Will and me left camp. He led the way as we rode to the east and uphill around the lake. He said it was the best way to go to make sure none of the miners or any of Blake's men noticed us starting out that time of day.
Aunt Hetty's grays were as calm as you could ever want horses to be. They seemed to be undisturbed by the indignity of being ridden with only a rope hackamore. I noticed that Will certainly handled the horse without a problem.
