Positive fantasy, fication chapter book for kids

Humans have long been afraid and distrustful of vampires. A young vampire named Allistaire, who is also part human, wants to change that. His family has been living among humans for hundreds of years and they’ve always used their abilities for good. One day, while reading his favourite superhero comic, Allistaire decides that he’s going to do everything he can to help humans. He enlists the aid of his best friend to help him become Kaptain Vamp.

Joanne Lecuyer's Kaptain Vamp shows we can all be heroes - 5 stars
There is something about being able to feel as though you have the power to change things around you. On television and comic books we see superheroes emerge that are able to change the day, but what about ordinary people like you and me? Can we really make a difference? Yes we can!

In KAPTAIN VAMP by Joanne Lecuyer we are able to see how a young vampire named Allistaire is able to see past what others might think of him and what he is able to do and make a decision that he is going to change the world around him. With the help of his best friend Rich, we see them devise a plan that will turn him into just another vampire to someone who is ready to be a force for good!

This story is great for those young and old for several reasons. One is shows that you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to people. Though Alistaire and his family are vampires they don't fit into the mold of what others might think of them. They are different. More importantly, they are INDIVIDUALS, not defined by the actions of others. There is also the point of what one person (or in this case vampire) can do. You might not think that as "one" you can change much, but Allistaire proves that it all begins somewhere! You can do much to help others around you just by being aware of your surroundings and being willing to help others.

The way KAPTAIN VAMP ends definitely leaves room for interpretation on what actually happened with the young vampire or what his next adventure will be, but that is exactly what readers will be wondering as they anticipate what the author has in store for them next.

Definitely a book that should be on your reading list, KAPTAIN VAMP shows that we can all be heroes.

Kaptain Vamp - 5 stars
Allistaire Arturius Doppleganger Varning the IV is a twelve year old (in human years) part vampire. He lives life like your average, normal twelve year old. Allistaire doesn't bite people or drink blood. He can eat anything as long as he gets a balanced, daily diet of raw meat.

Rich is Allistaires best friend. He also knows all about Allistaire and his family being vampires. Both Allistaire and Rich are really into comic books and since Allistaire has the usual vampire abilities of running faster, being very strong and hearing a conversation a mile away, they decide he should become a super hero. Allistaire also wants to show humans that vampires aren't all bad. Kaptain Vamp is the name Allistaire and Rich choose.

The first Kaptain Vamp act is to put a stop to the three Tambor brothers from bullying the kids at school. No one really saw Kaptain Vamp as he stopped the Tambor boys, so Rich and Allistaire decide to do another good deed. Mrs. Woolley uses a walker and always crosses the street in front of the bus. Rich decides to ride his bike going the opposite direction and Allistaire can save them both. The breaks go out on the bus and Allistaire saves their lives for real and they don't even know it.

There are plenty of great illustrations as well. I think kids of about 3rd and 4rth grade would enjoy this story because it shows a great friendship, trust, accepting differences in others, two loving families and the courage to stand up to bullies.

Ms Martin Teaches Media - 5 stars
This was a short novel with profuse illustrations. Allistaire is a young vampire with a human best friend. Allistaire wants to convince people that vampires can be helpful. To do that, he and Rich create an alter ego - Kaptain Vamp - and the two go around doing good deeds.

Allistaire's first good deed involves helping a young boy who has fallen down a cliff and broken his arm. Fortunately, his mother is a doctor and had taught all the kids first aid skills. Of course, he also has his super strength and jumping ability to help him with the rescue. The problems the kids solve are real life ones including stopping the school bullies from preying on younger kids.

The illustrations add to the story too. I liked the various full-color illustrations that decorated the book. I also liked the additional touch of magic that the necklace from Allistaire's grandfather gave him. It lets him wish himself into and out of his Kaptain Vamp costume when he needs to be Kaptain Vamp.

The story was a good one about friendship and the satisfaction that comes from doing good deeds. I think this would appeal to upper elementary students who are interested in vampires but aren't ready for anything scary.
