Ray Hawkins is a Detective Chief Inspector at a run-down police station in the East end of London. He is a no-nonsense copper from the old school of policing, and an expert thief-taker.
When he is called upion by the British Security Service to interview two petty criminals in relation to a burglary at a high profile address in Westmnster, he discovers a plot by a two hundred year old American secret society to overthrow the British Monarchy.
In the course of his investigation, he finds that over the centuries the society has infiltrated the highest corridors of power in both Britain and the United States.

The doorbell rang again. “Okay, I’m coming,” he called, and hauled himself out of his easy chair. He made his way down the hall toward the front door. Through the frosted glass panes he could see two figures in dark clothing standing on the porch.
Goddamned Mormons, He thought as he reached for the latch. Why can’t they leave a man in peace?
He opened the door, ready to give them a piece of his mind. The two men both wore black Brooks Brother’s suits and dark glasses.
“General Garrison?”One asked.
Garrison blinked in the sunlight. “Yes, I’m Garrison,” he said gruffly. “Who are you and what do you want?”
The other man spoke. “Would that be General Jack Garrison, late of the 1st Division United States Marine Corps?”
“Yes, that’s me, now who the hell are you?”
“Sir, is anybody in the house with you at the moment?
“No, dammit, what’s this all about.”
The two men looked at each other. The first one nodded and looked both ways down the quiet street. The second reached into his jacket and produced a Sig P226 suppressed 9mm.
Garrison looked down at the pistol then back at the two men. “What the…”
The gun popped three times, the first two rounds hit the old man in the chest and he staggered back a couple of steps. The third made a neat hole in his forehead. Jack Garrison, hero of the South Pacific and Korea, fell backwards onto the carpeted floor of his hallway, blood oozing from the three new holes in his head and body.
The second man placed the pistol back in his jacket and walked back down the driveway. The first man looked down at the dead veteran.
“Semper Fi, General,” he said, and closed the door.
