“Question,” Phil said. “Does this Carla number one think she killed you, Mitch?”
“I haven’t the faintest idea,” Mitch said. “But if she does, and she doesn’t hear about the death of a promising young scientist on the news tonight, she might realize she fluffed it.”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Ellis said. “I think she’s just trying to discourage us from looking into Glen Russell’s death.”
“A pretty dramatic form of discouragement,” Phil said. “But what does she hope to accomplish, anyway? All Mitch did was accidentally discover an old skeleton. All the rest of us did was report it to the authorities and describe what we saw. What’s the big deal? It’s not like she could have committed the original murder; she’s not nearly old enough.”
“Maybe she knows who did,” Rob said. “And she’s trying to keep us from finding out.”
“If that’s her plan, she should be trying to blow up the sheriff’s office,” Mitch pointed out. “Being as they’re the ones actually investigating the murder. We’re just a bunch of bumbling amateurs.”
