One table needed a check, and four people were waiting in line to be seated. The fries in the deep fryer were burning. And as the smoke alarm started going off, Lauren sighed and closed her eyes. When she opened them, her boss was rushing into the kitchen. He looked frazzled, and his hair and apron were in disarray. "Lauren, what's going on?" He whipped off his apron and frantically fanned the smoke away from the alarm. When it finally stopped beeping, he turned to her once again. "Don’t space out on me, Lauren. I need you," he pleaded. "Kevin and Nancy both called out sick, and I can't get a hold of Darla or Hailey. It's just you and me, kiddo." Lauren tried to sympathize with Dan, but there was a part of her that she had shut off a long time ago. She stopped caring about a lot of things the night it happened. Who cared if the customers didn't get their drinks? Who cared if they didn't eat? Who cared if the place caught on fire and burned to the ground? She sure as hell didn't. "Earth to Lauren!" he called while pulling the smoking fry basket from the hot grease. Dan was used to her spacing out. And in the past several months, it happened more often than not. "Lauren!" he yelled, snapping his fingers loudly. Slowly, she turned to him and said, "Dan, I quit." Dan looked stunned. Actually he looked more than stunned. He looked completely mortified, stupefied and everything in between. "What?" he asked in disbelief. "I quit," she repeated. She slipped out of her apron and threw it on the counter. With Dan screaming behind her, she grabbed her purse and coat and walked out the back door. It was a little after three in the afternoon, and the air was already bitterly cold. She didn't put her coat on, however. She wanted to feel the wintry air. She just wanted to feel anything really. Her car was parked in the back of the lot, and she revved the engine, letting it warm up. Her eyes darted to the restaurant through the slowly defrosting windshield. In a way, she felt sorry for Dan. He was going to have to handle the dinner rush by himself. Reality slowly began to sit in. She had just quit her job. Her sole income came from that part-time job. Being a college student and having a job was hectic, but worth the extra money to eat and pay for books. Lauren sat back in the seat and glanced at the clock. It didn't matter that she wouldn't have money. Her job didn't matter. College didn't matter. Nothing mattered because in less than seven hours she would be dead. Not what I expected... but in a good way!
I had to go out on Saturday night and found myself trying to make excuses to read another chapter of "The List"... "No you don't need make up, you can read one more chapter... You can just visit your friends in your pajamas, no need to get fancy so you can read another". I ended up finishing this at 1am, and I have no regrets! The list part of it was not what I had been expecting, it was even better! Character developement and the situations they were thrown into were very believeable (some of them unfortunately so). I'll warn you, you made need a tissue or two, but this was a great read and I'm eagerly awaiting more work from this great author!
