“Zukie, are you all right?” Lou’s anxious voice came from behind the police officers. She peered upwards.
“Course I’m not all right. I fell down the damn steps backwards. Lucky I landed on the grass or I’d have had a concussion. I might anyway.”
“Can you sit up, ma’am?” asked the woman officer.
“I don’t know.” Zukie painfully hoisted herself to a sitting position and felt her head, which had a sizable lump on the back of it. “Did you catch them?”
“Catch who?”
“The burglars.”
The officers looked at each other. “You’re the only one here, ma’am,” the male officer said. “Carrying a weapon, at the scene of a break-in.” He indicated the rolling pin, which had worked loose from her sleeve and was lying on the grass beside her.
“Oh, for Pete’s sake …” Zukie stopped. “Lou, didn’t you tell them?”
“Of course I did.”
The officers turned to him. “Is this your wife, sir?”
“No, she’s not,” Lou said, so emphatically that Zukie glared at him.
“Do you know her?”
Lou toyed with the idea of denying all knowledge, but decided against it. “Yes, she’s my cousin. Second cousin, that is,” he added, just so they would realize the connection wasn’t too close.
