Excerpt
“Jerry, can you come here?” The sound of Beth’s voice was so strange, that Jerry dropped what he was doing and hurried to the kitchen. Things had been going so smoothly since the weekend with the Fletchers, and Jerry wasn’t happy about any ripples.
“What’s wrong, hon?” The look on her face did nothing to allay his fears. Her lips were pursed, forehead wrinkled, and she looked angry. She almost seemed transfixed by the paper she was holding. Dear God, he thought, did Sandy make good on her threat to tell Beth? He drew a breath.
Beth looked up at him. “Do you remember when I sent for my birth certificate from the State of New York?” He nodded a yes, letting his breath out as she continued. “Well, it came today, but I can’t figure this out. It’s wrong!”
“What do you mean, wrong?” he asked, so relieved. “Did they send you someone else’s? Let me see it.”
She handed him the paper. “Let’s see, Elizabeth Rose Privitera. Well, that’s wrong, you’re middle name is Anne. What else? Born to Alice Mabel and Giuseppe Louis Privitera. Gino and Allie’s little girl. I wonder how they got the wrong middle name?”
“Keep looking,” Beth answered, rather shortly. “The date is wrong and the time is wrong. I was born on December 31, 1958 at 11:59pm. You know how my father makes a big deal every year about how I just made it in time to be a tax deduction, while my mother laments I didn’t wait one more minute to be the first baby born in 1959.”
“This says January 1, 1959 at 12:58am. You’re right, this is wrong. I wonder what happened?” He studied the document a moment longer. “I’ll bet this was a clerk’s error, hon. Look, its one hour difference, that’s all. What difference does this really make?”
“But my middle name is different as well, and all my identification is for Elizabeth Anne, not Elizabeth Rose. What can we do about that? How will I get my passport with this? We’re leaving for England in 45 days, and I need to get this done! Leave it to my mother to name me one thing legally and call me something else entirely my whole life!”
