If Tex had looked skinny and dirty before, he simply looked pathetic now. His dirty brown hair hung down into his eyes and he was wearing a filthy sweatshirt and jeans; the same jeans, Zukie realized, that had been ripped when she’d tackled him in the supermarket parking lot. His eyes flickered briefly toward Lou and then he fixed his gaze firmly on the floor.
“This is my cousin, Lou Romano,” Zukie said. “Second cousin, that is. He lives here, too. Lou, this is Tex Barrett.”
Lou looked like he’d been pole-axed, but his inborn sense of hospitality carried him through.
“Hi, Tex,” he said. “Zukie told me you two had, um, met before.”
Tex nodded. He slowly brought his eyes up and looked from Lou to Zukie.
“When’s the last time you had anything to eat?” she asked him.
Tex shrugged, which Zukie interpreted to mean he was too embarrassed to answer the question. That didn’t matter; when people were in trouble, her first instinct was to feed them. The more complicated stuff could come later.
