Leroy Doyle and Jody Stinson have unhappy relationships in High School and resolve to avoid that in college. Leroy scraps that idea when he meets Jody but Jody won't let him into her life.
Leroy and Jody meet during a freshman exchange dinner at Leroy's residence hall. Leroy is intrigued by Jody despite her standoffish attitude toward him. He pulls out all the stops and treats her with kindness and courtesy, unlike the high school boys she dated and knew. It takes Jody four years of college and two years in the work place to realize Leroy is the one for her but is it in time? Leroy has reached the end of the line in trying to win Jody's heart. He quit his job and left.

He approached Jody as she slowly looked up and turned on her lab stool at the sound of his voice. He was thrilled to see heer, noting she maintained herlovely preference for skirts. She pulled her lab coat together.
"Hi Lab Partner." He held out his hand. She ignored it.
"I was hoping to work alone." she looked intently at him.
"Is that a reflection on me or everybody in general?" He knew he was taking a risky step to the assertive side. Should he keep doing that? Being of a conceding attitude to her was really what he wanted to do. Nothing seemed to work, at least outwardly. As she prepared to answer, her scowl lessened, to Lesroy's relief.
"No, it's not a reflection on ou. My freshman professor let me work alone. Doctor Braddock isn't flexible about that."
"It may be a safety thing. I don't think he's questioning our lab skills." Leroy put on his lab coat.
"Are you going to be late for every lab?" So much for Jody's making two positive statements in a row to him.
