Clare Jennings is a popular family doctor. She's married to David, a psychiatrist. They would love to have a family but as yet have had no luck. Clare is overly committed to her work and whilst David is supportive, cracks begin to appear in their relationship as Clare takes on extra work and the responsibility for training a new doctor, who is good looking and charismatic.
As she grows closer to Sam, the new doctor, her own marriage suffers, plus, inadvertently she is helping Sam's girlfriend, without realising who she is.
When David finds out what has been going on, Clare starts to spiral out of control; she makes bad clinical judgements, feels responsible for a patient's death, recieves letters of complaint. This is so far removed from her normal high standards that she finds the guilt impossible to bear.
