Let’s suppose you must wear an eye patch. For whatever reason— an infection, light sensitivity, or a lazy eye—you have been directed to wear one. On one hand, you might bemoan this misfortune and complain about how you’re going to stick out because of the eye patch—everyone is going to notice and talk about the “person with the thing on his eye.” On the other hand, you could accept your fate and decide to take a different approach. Could a different attitude make you feel special instead of weird? What if you decide to have fun with it and decorate your eye patch with flowers and glitter? Or make a joke out of it by accessorizing with a prosthetic hook? Or hand out several at a staff meeting because it’s the “latest fad.” Claiming the eye patch or “owning” it increases your confidence and lets others feel more comfortable about it too.
Accepting the trait that you are so upset about lessens its sting and lets you see it for what it is—a differentiator. And here’s the big news: Differentiators are good. They let you stand out from the crowd. They are what make you you. They are to be embraced, developed, and treasured. We need to be kinder to ourselves and others about our unique traits. Without those, we would all be same. That would be a very boring world.
