Karen left home, leaving her family and dreams behind.
She returns for Thanksgiving only to slept with a man who could end her career, the most important thing to her.
Richard didn't need anyone in his life since his wife died. His work consumed him, until a storm delayed him.
He'd ended up in bed with Karen, only to have her run out and vow never to sleep with him again. But he needs more.
Karen is appalled to learn that her mother is selling the family farm, and to make it worse, Richard is the one who will be remodeling her home.
Richard is there, day after day, working with her.
Side by side.
Making it impossible for her to stay.
Her family and friends want to tear down all her old hopes and dreams.
Dreams that her father sowed years ago, before he died.
Dreams that she ran away from, that awful day he died.
They never guessed who was behind it all.
The Grand Instigator behind everything, pulling strings in the background.
Enter Grandfather, he raised his granddaughters the Kiowa way. He needs his heritage to be passed on to the next generation, but Karen keeps running away from him.
Grandfather takes one look at Richard and decides to put him through the trials.
No one courts his granddaughters, unless they were worthy.
But even if Richard passes the trials, can Grandfather convince them that they belong together?
And more importantly, with him?
Excerpt
“Pahana Dome, you made me proud just now.” Grandfather's voice startled him. He didn't know that Grandfather was in the barn. Laughing, Richard found Grandfather sitting on an old bench near a stall. He was sitting so quietly that Richard would never have known that he was there. Richard sat next to Grandfather and clapped him on the shoulder.
“You will go easy on him?” Richard ask him, with laughter in his voice.
“No, I will have much fun with this one. I was almost afraid for a moment, then when you gave him directions to my bedroom I almost laughed out loud. This is good, this is very good, Pahana Dome.”
“Does Painted Girl know about your trials?”
“No, none of the grandchildren do. I am glad that Painted Girl will be here for this trial. It will be a lot of fun. I had always thought that Painted Girl would get together with Jack RedHorse. But Jack is a lost Indian. I had hoped to help him find himself, but he resists the old ways. He cuts his hair. It is sad.”
“What are you doing here? Why aren't you outside dancing?”
“I am waiting on Christy. She is bringing me something and this is my special place. This is where Little Sparrows' father took his last breath. I come here to talk to him.”
“I am sorry, Grandfather, I do not wish to intrude.”
“You are not intruding Pahana Dome. But you should get back to your wife. She will be getting cold soon and needs you to warm her.” Grandfather told him.
“I will Grandfather, I will.”
“Grandchildren too. Make me lots of grandchildren. I am old. I need grandchildren to bounce on my knee.”
“I will do that too Grandfather. As soon as possible, too!”
Richard got up and patted Grandfather on the shoulder. He was happy and left Grandfather sitting with his eyes closed with a smile on his face. He looked peaceful and happy. Richard made his way back through the barn the way he had come in. He felt like whistling. He would have too, if a scream hadn't pierced the air. The scream penetrated him in a way he wouldn't have thought possible. It was horrible. He knew in that instant that it was Karen and that something awful had happened.
