This book helped me in a time of need
I read this book in 2012 and was interested because a young relative had been diagnosed with and treated for thyroid cancer. A year ago, a routine exam found a growth on my thyroid. I IMMEDIATELY dug this sucker out of my Kindle archives and re-read it with much more careful attention to detail! My growth is apparently benign and will be checked periodically, but I was a calmer patient having read this author's experiences and my doctor owes her a debt of gratitude (and so do I!)
I will admit that I was initially less interested in her experiences as a cancer survivor than in the story of her unusual family. All of us who have lived long lives are aware that even perfect-appearing families can hide tragic secrets. In this author's case, it was her mother's alcoholism, which she later realized was well-known to others. Sadly, her mother refused all attempts at intervention and remained an alcoholic until her death. Why this intelligent, talented, popular woman was driven to numb herself is not clear, but the damage to her children was predictable. It's one of those stories that stays with you long after you finish reading.
This is not a textbook, although there is a great deal of solid medical information. It also offers some tips that would be useful to any person facing a serious illness. I especially liked her idea of giving gift certificates for take-out restaurants as being more practical than casseroles for those living alone and not knowing exactly what they will be able to eat. This author is a professional communicator and she has written a very readable, helpful book.
Update (Sept, 2014) My latest ultrasound showed that one of the growths on my thyroid has grown and I was referred to an endocrinologist. Thanks to this author, I was aware that I would probably have a biopsy on my initial visit, which would have otherwise come as a complete shock, as it did to her. Knowing to ask about this in advance made SUCH a difference in my experience. I can't thank this author enough for sharing her story. It has helped me and I know it has helped others.
When you hear the diagnosis of cancer, you need support
If you are looking for support or for the courage to fight something as scary as Cancer read Jane Freund book. I was ill when I read this. I did not have cancer but did suspect my illness had something to do with my hypothyroidism. I read her book for the reinforcement of the courage I needed to figure out how to regain my health and for what she had to tell me about the thyroid and illness concerning it.
