Opening the glove compartment, Luke pulled out the licensed gun he owned. Holding the compact 9 mm in the palm of his right hand, he ran his fingers along the barrel. He placed the weapon on his lap and leaned his forehead against the steering wheel, trying to make sense of what happened.
He traced the events of the day and nothing had changed. Traci was dead. A loud thump startled Luke, bringing him back to the present. The gun had fallen to the floor. He picked it up and it felt cold and heavy in his clammy hands.
He was shaking, tears flowing down his face. He placed the barrel to the side of his head and pulled the trigger back. He stopped when Traci's face flashed before him. He lowered the gun.
He banged his forehead several times against the steering wheel and sobbed. "How could he think about taking his life? It would solve nothing." If anything his death would cause more complications. He had created this mess, and it was up to him to unravel it.
