Undeniably Great!
The amazing tale of Anne Marie left me unable to move from my chair until I had absorbed every last word. The dialogue is straight forward and true to life, the descriptions are not overly lengthy but rather simply descriptive. You flow through the story as if you were an observer privileged enough to walk in the characters shadows, never willing to miss a detail.
I have recommended this book to whomever I come across with a book in hand. Having read Maple Dale and Favored to Win, other books of the authors I think it is safe to say that her writings are extraordinary and honest. If we're lucky, MaryAnn Myers will share with us many many more wonderful stories.
Fantastic Journey
Invited to a 50's party, a young woman begins a fantastic journey with the purchase of a prom dress from a second hand store. Evicted and unemployed, finding a new apartment opens the door for a wide cast of characters to become involved. There's the almost blind retired circus performer that can still read tea leaves, the telephone repairman and the Viet Nam veteran. This is another wonderful story that will keep you spell bound and not want to put it down as the young woman searches for the story behind the dress.
I :aughed! I Cried!
I bought this book a while ago and then never got around to reading it. When I finally did, I was surprised. I thought... probably because I didn't look too far into it... that this book was going to be about magic. It was... in a sense, but more about friendship, love and learning about who you are. I'm not one for chick novels or chick flicks but I enjoyed this immensely.
Anne Marie isn't talking to her mom, lives in a building with some pretty strange neighbors... she just got evicted from another building... and has just lost her job. On top of that her phone... which has just been installed, keeps doing some very strange stuff. But the strangest thing is the dress that she bought at a vintage shop. It is talking to her. Well, more like sending her images from the person who last wore it.
Throughout the book, which is mostly a journey of self discovery, Anne Marie learns a few things about herself. There were a lot of funny moments, but there were also some sad. A scene towards the end brought tears to my eyes. And while I find it odd that she didn't have a cell phone... something I wondered about as she's wheeling a cactus throughout the city and looking for a phone booth, I think that helped add to the quality of the book. It wasn't what I expected... it was better.
