Sometimes, we all need a little guidance in our lives, delivered to us by a unique individual whose wisdom and experience with the world knows no bounds.
Valerie Coxton is a woman who finds herself at a crossroads in life; still living (unhappily) at home with her parents and brother, she is about to embark on a new and exciting future with her lover, Sharon. There's just one thing standing in Valerie's way; her obnoxious, drunken, moralising and truly monstrous mother, Kath Coxton, AKA 'The Dragon'.
Excerpt
For a while, Mom just stood there, propped up against the fridge, smoking and drinking, her body swaying in time with the crappy, tinny music that was coming from the cassette player. Sharon and I sat in silence, holding hands underneath the kitchen table. That particular gesture of affection hadn’t, up until that point, been noticed by my mother, probably because she was so pissed that she could barely see, but somewhere down the line, Mom spotted Sharon’s hand entwined with me own. This brought my mother from out of her trance-like state, and she came zig-zagging back towards the pair of us, spilling wine onto the floor as she did so.
“Oi! Stop that! Stop that!” She ordered. I wasn’t sure what Mom was talking about, at first.
“Stop what?” I wanted to know.
“That!” She replied, staring down at my hand. “Stop it!” My mother repeated. “Stop it, stop it, stop it!” I realised what she was referring to.
“No. We’re only holding hands.” I responded.
“It’s… immoral!” Slammed Mom, taking a drag on her cigarette, ash dropping from the end of it and onto the kitchen lino. I shook my head.
“One of these days, this whole house is gonna catch fire because of your bloody smoking.” I commented. Suddenly, my mom’s face screwed up, teeth gritting together, eyes turning into horizontal slits, her whole body tightening, as if she were trying to hold-in a really urgent wee.
