Tomas backhanded me as I hit the chair, making my head spin but not preventing me from landing sideways as I'd intended. I took the impact on my right hip, drawing up my left leg and tensing the muscles. He came in closer, his face lit with pleasure as he raised his fist. From somewhere in the background I heard Luis laughing, but the sound was cut off by the surprised scream as I plunged a stiffened foot into Tomas' midriff. He fell backwards with his eyes staring and his mouth wide, as if he'd been stabbed.
