Chapter 1 The surrender of myself,
and the beginning of life
as poetry
--It comes: the surrendering,
much harder to bare
than death would have it.
It is the facing up
to the coward-ness
emotion-full life.
Nelson stumbles out of the small downtown pub, overlooking the harbor, which stares the colossal white iron ferry in the face. Cars roll out of its gaping jaws and down the gangplank from Connecticut and out onto the soil of Long Island day and night.
Mobs of tourists armed with iPhones, cameras and pocketful's of cash swarm the sidewalks where many a weary mariner has traversed. The mighty steel colossus belches out a tremendous blast of horn heard for miles around.
Nelson muffles the noise with palms to ears, while drawn to the pull of the illuminated arches of a McDonalds from around the corner, like a moth to the flame of charbroiled delights.
