A relaxing vacation turns out to be just the opposite for Zukie and Lou in the eighth mystery in the series...

Most people would jump at the chance of a free, relaxing vacation on a picturesque island, but not Zukie Merlino, to whom 'rest' is a four-letter word. Her mood improves, however, when there's a death at the rustic inn where she's a reluctant guest. Despite the best efforts of her cousin Lou and the local law enforcement officers, Zukie is soon hot on the trail of a murderer, a task that sees her commandeering the inn's kitchen, stealing a boat and getting a lot closer to the great outdoors than she ever anticipated.

Excerpt

Zukie didn’t wait to see Jenny’s reaction to her comment, although she was sure she heard a sharp intake of breath.
Or that might have come from Lou, who took her elbow and said, “Let’s go down to the beach, dear,” in a tone that didn’t invite discussion.
“What was that supposed to mean?” Dorothy asked Zukie’s retreating back.
Zukie might have replied, but Lou was steering her rapidly toward the door and then down the steps.
“Are you out of your ever-loving mind?” he hissed, as they moved away from the inn. “If there’s something weird going on here – like you seem to want to think there is – it’s not a real bright idea to let on that you know anything about it, is it?”
“That Jenny gets on my nerves. So does Hugh, come to think of it, always leering at me.”
“So I gathered. But we’ve still got five days to go, unless you get us thrown out earlier. So it might pay you to get along with them.”
Zukie brightened momentarily, since she hadn’t considered eviction as a way of ending the vacation early and returning to civilization. Then a vision of what Carol would say flashed across her mind, to be followed by Jim’s disapproving frown. You’d think I was six years old and getting scolded, she thought.
“Trouble is, Lou, she was up to something back there in the woods. So was Ralph, I reckon. Maybe the two things weren’t connected, but when the guy’s wife – who was perfectly OK at breakfast – suddenly can’t manage to make a few sandwiches and soup for half a dozen people at lunch … well, what am I supposed to think?”
Lou mulled this statement. “I suppose asking you not to think at all isn’t an option?”
“Nope.”
“God help us.”

Loved it!! Zukie wins Best Sleuth award IMO!
5.0 out of 5 stars

I discovered this series a few months ago and read all 7 one right after the other they were so enjoyable. Was happy to see a new one and absolutely loved it. Zukie is a feisty, very nosey busybody, volatile Italian lady in her 50's who sees, hears and figures out things no cop can and to me is one of the best sleuths in all of the cozy mysteries out there today. Her theories stump all the men around her but they have learned to listen because she usually is right. She does some crazy things sometimes to get her proof but admits it when she does something stupid.
When her daughter and son-in-law send her and cousin Lou on a week's vacation to a small island in Puget Sound she knows she's going to be bored out of her mind but from the first hour there she knows something is suspicious about the Inn itself (the rooms do not have locks on the doors!) and the people around her. Poor old staid Lou tries to stop her meddling as usual but nothing can and when there's a murder she's at her nosey best and the main help in solving the mystery of course. Zukie also finds out an ironic twist at the end that I feel will lead into some interesting developments in the future.
Very good clean, laugh out loud, well written mystery and I'm really looking forward to more. Hope Cynthia keeps them coming!

This mystery series is so fun to read!
5 stars
Zukie is quite a character and sends me into fits of laughter when she unleashes her fearlessness.
