It was September 1986.
Entering the school on day one as a 6-year-old, I was a mix of curious, happy and afraid at the same time. Getting in, I could see the funny looks, the expressions and the fingers being pointed at us, I was none the wiser. To me, I was just another one of the kids.
I got into the class, my brother to the year above went his separate way. Our primary school teacher was a white Portuguese who had recently returned from Angola and was very welcoming, warm and tried to integrate me.
Other kids, started initially trying to touch my hair, it then escalated to chanting “he is black, he stinks and washes his face with coal”. For the first time in my life, I was being told that I looked different and I was different.
Even as a child, I felt so embarrassed and sad, if the ground could open up and swallow me, I would gladly sink in. I went home and did not want to return, and when sharing with my brother he had the same experience.
You see, dear reader, thankfully things are different in today’s Lisbon however in order for race relations to improve, my generation was the sacrificial lamb of the black community.
