Erhu, also called the Southern Fiddle, is a two-stringed musical instrument that originates from the barbarian tribes (胡人) to the north of ancient China. Known as the Chinese violin in the West, erhu belongs to the bowing family in the modern Chinese orchestra. Erhu can be played either in solo or ensemble, and its popularity is largely attributed to its unique timbre that resembles human voices.
