Monday
Kitty wakes up. “Momma, where are you?” he yells with a desperate cry. The sun is just beginning to shine, and he is dry. However, it is wet everywhere outside of the leaning roof. He suddenly realizes he is very thirsty and hungry. He finds a puddle of fresh rainwater and drinks. “Mm, this is good.” He starts looking for food. “Good morning Momma, and good morning Captain, wherever you are. I miss you, and I miss my food bowl.”
Kitty finds a mouse and a few bugs in the woodpile. He decides to explore before heading back to the dock to take his bath in the sun and wait for Momma. “Maybe Momma will find me today.” Kitty sighs. He begins to realize maybe Momma will never come back. He shakes that thought off.
He can see a house not too far away. Kitty starts walking. As he gets closer, he gets more careful. “There could be varmints in there.” He hides behind a tree and looks. He sees nothing moving. He sneaks closer and sees a door and two big ports. He tiptoes around the side. There is another door with a little door. He goes up to the little door and touches it with his nose. It moves open a little bit. He can see a big galley, but there are no good smells. “This little door goes to the inside! I better wait until dark to sneak in there.”
Beside the galley door is a tree. He climbs it. “I can see the galley real good from here.” He jumps back down, goes around to the front door, and climbs the tree there. “I can see all around and inside to a saloon from this tree. I am hungry. Where is Momma? Maybe she is at the dock!”
Kitty runs all the way back to the dock. It is still empty. Kitty sits down and looks out to the water. A tear rolls down his face. He picks himself up, takes a deep breath, and goes hunting for lunch. After he eats, he lies under the tree by the dock and takes a bath. “Momma says I must stay clean.”
“Hey kid!”
“MadmanMax, hello, how are you?” Kitty looks up and tries to smile.
“Yeah, kid. Good. Did you find a good spot to sleep up near the house and barn?”
“Good enough, I guess. I slept on the dry grass next to the woodpile. It was safe. There were mice, bugs, and water for breakfast, too. MadmanMax, have you seen any boats here today?”
“No, kid, no boats came here today. Did you find the people in the house?”
“People, no, I saw the galley. There are people in the house?”
“Yeah, they moved in late spring. Maybe you can get to know them. They just have one small stinking dog, and he is gone a lot with his owner. I really do not like dogs. I keep an eye on all those stinking dogs.”
Kitty goes back to the house. He climbs the tree near the galley. The galley port is open but it has a screen to keep the bugs out, just like the screens Captain has on Betty’s ports. He perches on a limb and sees the galley in full view. He can hear too.
Kitty’s ears perk up and his eyes open wide. No one notices peeking into the galley a young and most handsome black and rust calico cat.
"There are people in there. Oh my, my, there are people in there!" Kitty had not seen people since forever. “I want a home! Meow! He screams.” Kitty suddenly remembers what his Momma said about rushing up to strangers. “I better be quiet and watch first. MadmanMax says he watches a stinking dog in there.”
Three people sit at the galley table, two adults, and one young boy. Kitty watches and listens.
