Dits, tales, jokes & ditty's

With hundreds of men, tons of military paraphernalia, complicated machinery, technological equipment, weaponry, stores and various other forms of kit, you could be assured that not every day was straightforward and undemanding. Equipment failed. People made mistakes. Accidents and mishaps occurred. Personalities and characters clashed. Add to this mix the activities of matelots on a 'run ashore' in those far-flung, unsavoury and questionable seaports. Include beer, spirits, wine, women and song into the equation and the resulting concoction is a wonderful hothouse for the creation of imaginative narrative. The goings-on, from both aboard and ashore, created astonishing accounts of events to be told at stand easy or after a watch; when the exaggerated telling's of the day's happenings would be shared in the mess square. This book is not one which simply and only harks back in nostalgic fashion to the past, Jack's Dits is an authentic validation, a historical record of royal naval social history; one told by the voices of those who served. It is a true and genuine recording of life during the Royal Navy's heydays, the late 1950's through to the earlier part of the 1980's.

Excerpt

Alongside in Dolphin, on a quiet Sunday.
To relieve the boredom, it was decided to wind-up the Ark Royal, which was laying in drydock in Pompey.

A telephone call was made to the bosuns mate, allegedly from the Queens Harbour Masters office, enquiring as to the depth of water in the dock bottom.

"I don't know sir" was the reply to our question.

"Well, go and find out" was the curt response.

About 15 minutes later, a puffing bosuns mate (who'd obviously just completed the marathon of going into the dock bottom and then back up to the gangway) came back on the phone.

"About 3 inches, sir" he puffed.

"Very good - pipe hands to bathe"

Pissed ourselves laughing.

Professional Reviews

Absolutely brilliant, didn't stop giggling throughout the book
Absolutely brilliant, didn't stop giggling throughout the book. Lots of "memory joggers" of things that I witnessed in my time in the Mob, or close to things that happened to me!!!!

Ideal for any ex matelot
Bought this for an extra Christmas present for my husband.
He's ex-navy and was really pleased with it.
Lots of funny stories, several of his friends have now bought this book too.

Brought back many good memories
A good read brought back many memories from my naval days, I'm still laughing.
