Dizi, also called Hengdi (橫笛), is a Chinese transverse flute (i.e. we hold it horizontally when we play it) usually carved with twelve holes. It is one of the musical instruments indigenous to China, with a history of more than 8 000 years since the Neolithic Age. Known as the Chinese bamboo flute in the West, dizi belongs to the blowing family in the modern Chinese orchestra. Dizi can be played either in solo or ensemble, and is popular for its portability and relatively low price.
