The Old Mainer and the Sea, about a dory fisherman, is an allegorical tale about the circular nature of hope and deliverance.

Eben York goes out fishing one day, rowing six miles from his inland home towards the harbor on the mainland, hauling in cod as he goes. But a porpoise tangles his lines, fog rolls in, and an accident leads to a broken oar. Lonely, tired, and adrift, Eben is almost ready to give in to the embrace of the sea, when rescue comes in an unexpected form.

Excerpt

"Eben startled at an unusually strong pull on the bait. He slowed his rowing. Suddenly, all the lines became taut. The Hunky Dory swayed from side to side. A harbor porpoise shot from the water's edge, frantically shaking its head. Three bait hooks pierced its short beak. As the frightened porpoise rolled in the water, the fishing lines coiled around its body."

Professional Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
"Elements of a legend and a folk tale combine to highlight the good deed of a Maine fisherman."

Maine Sunday Telegram
"The Old Mainer and the Sea" may owe a small debt to Hemingway, but it is distinctly its own story. The book is a visual delight with a captivating story, a magic combination for young children."
