My Mother
“My mother is a serial killer.”
“What!?” asked the officer, her face gone ashen. “What are you saying?” She suddenly felt cold and clammy in the too-hot room in the old house. The look on the teenagers face had gotten her more than his word. He seemed dead serious, and nonchalant given the seriousness of what was happening.
“I'm trying to tell you. She kills people. It's what she does. You should stop her,” explains the boy, pushing his long, dark bangs out of his face with the back of his hand. “Really. I just can't take it anymore.”
“Does your father know about this?”
“Of course not,” he spits out at the officer, as if to tell her how stupid she sounds. “What self-respecting man would stay with a woman who kills people? I think she does it because she hates that he is gone so much.”
“Oh... and is he gone now?”
“Yup. Ran off to Ireland this time. Business trip, he said. He really hates it in Bear Wood. He keeps telling her there is nothing here for us. He keeps trying to persuade her to move.”
“What is your name, son. How old are you?”
“My name is Brad. I'm not your son. And I am thirteen.”
She shakes her head up and down slowly. Smart-ass, she thinks, while smiling at him. “When did he leave this time?”
“Last Tuesday. He should be back tomorrow.”
“How much do you know about what your mother does to these men?”
