Miss Crystal
The day it rained on everyone
Miss Crystal tried to hide;
but she found no spot within herself
to silently abide.
Her meager Christmas presents
she threw from her window sill.
She did it every year.
It was the village thrill.
Miss Crystal gasped a child-like gasp.
“Why so?” the children asked,
as near her lighted Christmas Tree
love stood for all the world to see.
She thought, “Such love is agony.”
“Loving will destroy me.”
Then a little child came near
with poverty greater than her fear;
and touching his hand to the Christmas Tree
asked, “Crystal Woman, do you love me?”
