Throughout the above chapters the erhus I introduce are all tuned at D4/A4 for the inner and outer strings, which is the default setting. However, there are indeed a few songs in the traditional realm in which the open strings are set at different pitches, and two notable examples are Er Quan Ying Yu/二泉映月 and the Great Wall Capriccio/長城隨想曲. I am not going to discuss the two songs in details since they require players with great skills and long experience, but want to highlight that the open strings for these songs are tuned at G3/D4 and C4/G4 respectively. There are strings (Chang Cheng Xian/長城弦) and even erhus (Er Quan Hu/二泉胡) specifically designed for these songs, with the open strings tuned at pitches rather than D4/A4 without relieving their tension.
