Jack opened his eyes to see Tom sitting on a small metal chair, holding his head in his hands. “What’s wrong, Tom?”
“Look around, little dude.”
Images flew across Jack’s mind. He remembered sitting at the dinner table with the sausage on his fork, its aroma in his nose and the blue light on the device in Tom’s hand. He could see the two girls looking hungrily at him and wondering if they had feelings for him as did Alexis. He remembered the words of the neighbor and Henry’s son and suddenly their meaning seemed more sinister. He sat up and looked around. He and Tom were locked in a holding cell. The room they were in was large, with several other empty holding cells. Near the door to whatever was outside sat a large man chewing on what looked like a boiled, skinless human hand. He looked desperately at Tom and said, “They’re cannibals.” The guard laughed.
Tom looked at Jack with an emotionless face and said, “I told you not to come.” Jack stared back with a look that said, “What do we do now?” Tom only shrugged his shoulders and looked down.
“Well, my beauties, they’re about ready for you on the processing line,” the guard said, having tossed the sinew and bones into a waste can. “We have to have a two-ton order of ground meat ready by morning for delivery to St. Louis.”
“What kind of sick, perverted, motherfucker are you anyway?” Tom shouted.
The guard laughed again and said, “The kind who is going to stir fry your cock and balls for my dinner later!” He pulled a pistol from his belt and moved over to the door. “Don’t worry, dinner, this is just a tranquilizer. You have to be alive to bleed out correctly and not spoil the meat. Who’s first?” Tom raised his hand slightly and the guard fired. Tom grabbed the dart from midair and held it tight. Without thinking, Jack grabbed the guard’s shirt and pulled his face into the bars. His nose cracked with a terrifying crunch and blood poured from it. He reached through the bars to break Jack’s grip.
Tom put his arm through the bars and around the guard’s head, pulling it through the bars, but it wouldn’t fit. The guard held Jack around the neck and was trying to squeeze the life out of him. Tom grunted and squeezed with all of his might and the guard’s head moved between the bars with a sickening cracking. Tom then shoved the tranquilizer dart through the guard’s eye and into his brain. The guard’s arms fell limp and Jack gasped for air. “Get the key,” Tom said very deliberately, still supporting the guard’s weight with his arm. Jack found the key and unlocked the door. The two walked out, leaving the dead guard hanging with his head lodged between the bars. “Jack,” Tom said, causing the young man to turn his head. “It only gets worse from here.” Tom reached the door and stood panting against it. “Let’s go!” He pushed the door open.
Inside the next room, they found a man chugging from a bottle of cheap whisky. The kill line was behind him. Three naked people were gagged, bound at the feet and hands, and their foot bindings were looped over hooks in the ceiling. The first two were men and they were already dead, their necks having been slashed and their heads covered with blood, which still dripped from the second man. Their heads were inches above a trough filled with blood and water. The third was a black woman and she was still alive.
The horror of what she had seen and the recognition of her own fate were etched on her face. The man with the bottle suddenly realized he was not alone. He set his bottle down, grabbed a second knife and approached them menacingly. “Where the fuck is Georgie?” Then he saw the dead man through the open doorway. “You fucking bastards! I’ll kill you for that.” He stepped over to the woman, slapped her buttocks and said, “I’ll take care of you in a second, okay?” He rushed them, waving both knifes wildly. Tom grabbed the closest table and threw it at him, knocking him from his feet. Seeing the man was disoriented, Jack moved to the side. The man knocked the table away and screamed, “You’re dead now, motherfucker!” Tom dived under another table and the man shoved it aside. The man smiled an evil grin, knowing he had won. Tom tried to cover his head and neck with his arms as the man moved to cut him to ribbons. Suddenly, Jack was behind him with one of the hooks that connected to the overhead trolley. He swung with all of his might. As he did, the man turned to kill him. The point of the hook pushed through the man’s eye and into his brain, causing him to stumble forward and then collapse into the trough of blood, splashing bloody water all over the floor.
“Grab her around the waist to support her weight,” Tom’s voice said into Jack’s head. Jack knew this had to be a dream, and so the dream of Jack complied. He put his arms around her waist and lifted her up so Tom could pull her feet off the hook. Now her whole weight was on Jack’s shoulder and his knees shook but supported it. He carried her over to the open floor and set her down as gently as he could. Jack stumbled and sat on the cold, bloody floor. He watched Tom remove her gag and bindings. She threw her arms around his neck and began to cry. Jack knew he was dreaming, or more correctly, having a nightmare. None of this could really happen so he closed his eyes in hopes it would all fade away. And then he felt her lips on his.
“Thank God you showed up!” she said. “I can’t believe they killed John and Frank. What in hell is this place?”
Tom had pulled his shirt off and was helping her put it on. Jack gazed up at Tom and noticed several scars on his torso, along with a tattoo that read ‘AFIRS’. Tom noticed him staring and said, “Jack, go get that bastard’s pants. We can’t have this lady walking around naked from the waist down.”
Jack was beginning to realize this nightmare was actually happening as he started to undo the man’s belt. His head and shoulders were submerged in the bloody liquid. He noticed Tom was squatting next to the woman and talking to her in a hushed voice. She kept shaking her head from side to side. With a final tug, Jack pulled the man’s pants off and hurried back over to the other two, handing the trousers to the woman who managed to pull them on. Tom grabbed the ends of the belt and knotted them together since the pants and belt were much too large for her. “You can’t leave them here,” she moaned.
