Excerpt
Jack and Alexis spent what was left of Jack’s birthday packing for their temporary exile in Mexico. The transport crawlers were due at their homes early the following morning, and everything had to be ready when they arrived. All the linens were packed, so Jack slept in his sleeping bag on top of the bare mattress. Before closing his eyes, he had called Alexis to wish her a good night and tell her how wonderful things would be in Mexico. Of course, she could see right through Jack’s sugarcoating. Neither really wanted to run away from a fight, but being teenagers, they had little choice but to do what their parents said. Before disconnecting, Jack told her everything would be fine because they would be together.
Sometime later, Jack woke suddenly. All he knew was that someone was holding a gloved hand over his mouth. The man wore all black and had a kind of mask over his face. Jack thought he was still dreaming, but it was not quite a dream. “Don’t speak!” the masked man warned. “Make a sound and I’ll slit your parents’ throats, got it?” The strange voice had a distinct accent that Jack had never heard before, or had he? Within seconds, he found himself carried outside and loaded into the back of a truck. His mouth had been gagged and his head covered so he could not see what was happening or where he was being taken. He felt a sharp pain in his arm, and suddenly he was separate from his body and the dream resumed. In his dream, he saw his friend Crazy Tom rescuing a woman and her children from a hidden prison and leading them to safety. Now, Tom was with Steve Caster and Scott Naughton, and they were driving out of a massive slum with the woman and her children. What a strange dream, he thought. Then his mind was a blank.
