I love historical fiction because it brings history to life. And I love the history of ancient Egypt because it is so early in the development of civilization and it is well chronicled thanks to the Rosetta Stone helping to translate the hieroglyphs.
In my second novel, Alone?, I devoted a chapter to the life of Seti II. He later returns in the 21st-century as a clone from the repaired DNA of his mummy. When I was in the mummy room in the Cairo Museum in 1977, I was very impressed with the ability to look down at Seti's face and see him the way he looked 3500 years before--amazing. On the other hand, the great Pharaoh, Ramses II's mummy was merely merely a pile of wrapping material, indistinguishable mummified flesh and bones.
A reviewer that I trust told me that I needed to throw out that chapter and another one because they were irrelevant to my book's story. In a way he was right, but I wanted to show the link of our civilized beginnings between our past as hunters and gatherers, to civilizations, and finally, into the scientific and technological beings we are today.
