A mysterious woman and her two kids attempt to get rid of the rest of their family.

Estranged, she sat in her rickety old shack
with just her son and daughter,
both grown in years but minds still young,
deciding what to do with the bodies out back.

Pulled from school and taught by their mother
those kids didn’t know any better
they followed her like two loyal dogs
even if meant killing their father and brother.

The sun began to set as the old beauty wondered
what to do? what to do?
extended family ties she cut
because they made her feel outnumbered

Who would miss her husband and son?
She wouldn’t have ordered murder
If they had only followed her command
and let her do what she had always done.

Going to the cupboard, she grabbed a dusty book,
“Grandmother knew best,” she murmured
as she paged through the sheets.
“Ah, this one!” reading it twice to not anything overlook.

Throwing this and that on her stove top
including dog’s blood and trout’s eye
she followed the recipe from her grandmother
as her kids watched in the backdrop.

A knock came at the old shack’s door,
"Say not a word," she told them,
"Hand those devils their candy and treats
and turn off the light so they don’t come any more."

Her son and daughter dutifully obeyed
as she rocked back and forth
watching her witch’s spell brew
and grimaced at Halloween’s charade.

Witches are real, she cursedly thought,
not with warts and brooms,
but with beauty and silken voices
as she summoned the dearly departed to the boiling pot.

"The only way to get rid of the body," she said,
"is to cook its spirit up nice just as grandmother did,
and eat it while its still steamy and hot
served alongside some good cornbread.”

Stirring her pot once and twice, she dished some out.
Three bowls she served as the dead's spirits pleaded for life.
But they ate on as the bodies out back dissolved into dust
and the spirits waned until nothing was left, even the eye of a trout.

Truly creepy and well penned. I enjoy writing and reading horror stories.

Hi Ron - Sorry you found it morbid. The Disney kid Halloween movie Hocus Pocus is about three witches who kill children with a spell and a brew, so they can eat their souls to stay young. This poem was inspired by that beloved Halloween movie with a few twists for adults. I wanted to entertain with a creepy plot but threw in some funnies like spirits with cornbread and a trout's eye.

Hi Michael - Honey! Yes! Should have thought of that! ;)

Hi Sandie and Richard- Thank you very much!!

I don't find murder and cannibalism as a "fun" way to celebrate Halloween. I don't think it is creepy, just morbid. If that's what you intended, you succeeded.

Creepy for sure. And there's nothing like spirits and cornbread. I like mine with a dash of honey.

A fun story-poem, Lauren. Kept my attention from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing. Continued inspiration. R
