I love how Temeke and Santiago work together even if Temecke can be a bit brash
at times, but he is fighting daily prejudice with his fellow policemen because he is a foreigner and not one of them. Must read! Get the next in the series - Past Rites!
Intense and riveting
This is a great follow up to the 9h Hour. In this well outing of the well written series Temeke is brought into deal with the abduction of the mayor's son. At first it seems a straightforward crime, but it gradually becomes clear that there is more to the family, the abduction than meets the eye. The plot becomes more intense when it seems that an old crime that had long gone cold suddenly seems linked in some way to the events that take place. This is a tense well paced novel that keeps you reading until the very end. Temeke is as mysterious and compelling as ever and we find even more about Malin and her complex background that adds great spice to what is an excellent book.
Book2 in a gripping crime series - I'm hooked
I loved ‘The 9th Hour’, Book 1 of Detective Temeke’s crime series, but I think ‘Night Eyes’ is even better. Claire Stibbe gets inside the characters’ minds, with an intensity and control over a wide range of different personalities and styles. She gave us the thoughts of a serial killer in ‘the 9th Hour’ and in ‘Night Eyes’ we are equally drawn into the limited understanding of a boy scout; limited because he’s too young to comprehend the adult scenes he’s witnessed and limited because he has no idea why he’s been kidnapped. Neither has the reader although we pick up on little clues and wonder… as do the detectives when they find the paper trail this ingenious youngster is laying for them.
In addition to the crime plot, I enjoyed the complex relationships between the police officers, although ‘enjoyed’ doesn’t describe how I felt towards the macho, sexist attitudes faced by Malin, who has to deal with her own insecurities in a hostile working atmosphere. The gallows humour and tough talk comes over as very realistic. Temeke himself is well drawn and his own background means he will never fit in any more than Malin will – the tension in their partnership is growing tentatively towards team spirit and support. I hope this blossoms further in Book 3 and look forward to the further invetsigations of New Mexico’s finest.
New Mexico is almost a character within the novel and I can really imagine both the landscape and the sense of Native American history – and present-day issues – bringing a unique sense of place and people to the police locker-rooms.
