At the open door, she faced the one person she thought she’d never see again or wasn’t looking forward to seeing. “Brandon, I thought you moved out west. California?” She stepped back to let him in from the cool evening air. “What a surprise.” The last time she’d seen him was at her father’s funeral. Except for a short greeting at the door of the funeral home, she did everything she could to avoid a lengthy conversation with him by staying a distance. After all this time she still had a problem looking into his gentle green eyes. She gazed at him, knowing by the look on his face, his love for her had not diminished. Was the sudden thump in her gut a captured feeling of her own? She didn’t want to think about it. It was better to leave it all in the past.
