P.I. Dick Hardesty finds himself trying to head off open warfare between the police and the gay community over the issue of gays on the police force. Dick has a very personal interest, and things are spinning out of control.
When Dick's old college friend Tom Brady moves into town with his "protective coloration" wife--Tom's gay and Lisa is lesbian-- and announces he's planning to join the police force, Dick knows there's trouble ahead.
And later, when Officer Brady, off duty and with Dick in a gay bar, responds to a vicious attack on several lesbians and gay men by gang members, it sets off a chain of events that sets the police against the community in ways no one could have foreseen.

He finished his coffee, laid his knife and fok on his now empty plate, and edged it slightly forward toward the center of the table to indicate that he was done. Then he again resumed his eye lock.
"So," he said, "the bottom line is this: Chief Black's enemies are looking for any reason to discredit and even get rid of him. They would love nothing better than to use this incident as a chance to get at Chief Black by demanding that he fire Brady. That would be an unmitigated disaster, for the department and the gay community. To fire a cop for saving the lives of members of that community would send a horrific message and do incalculable and possibly irreparable harm."
